John Oliver Swings and Misses at Injustice

John Oliver’s HBO program “Last Week Tonight” has certainly made a name for itself the last couple of years, exposing the inconvenient truth with respect to a wide variety of issues –from America’s frightening infrastructure problems to the corrupt Miss America Pageant. Oliver often makes some great points and does the public a great service – in a very humorous manner of course. Recently, however, in exposing the practices of unscrupulous televangelists, he swung hard and missed – quite badly.

Conservatism, liberalism, or non-aggression?

There is a distant friend of mine who is a conservative, political activist who regularly insults and belittles ideological opponents on Facebook. A few weeks ago in one of his many cyber-arguments he quipped, “I am a social conservative and a Republican because of my faith in Christ.” A few days later, my wife and I were entering one of our favorite restaurants. Out front was an older, economy car with both 2008 and 2012 Obama/Biden bumper stickers and another sticker declaring, “I am a Democrat because of my faith.” Beside the statement was a cross.

The Israel of God and American Foreign Policy

I want to address something that concerns me much more than momentary arguments over foreign policy. I would like to address Christians, specifically from the Bible, on two separate, but inter-connected questions. The first question I would like to attempt to answer is whether or not the current nation state known as Israel today is “the Israel of God”. In other words, is the current geographic nation-state that was established in the early 1950’s the same entity as the Biblical Israel?

Should Christians rethink capital punishment?

Especially for death penalty proponents, Romans 13:4 has come to occupy a central role in debates on capital punishment. There Paul writes: “[I]f you do what is wrong, you should be afraid for the authority does not bear the sword in vain! It is the servant of God to execute wrath on the wrongdoer.” Notably, Southern Baptists cite Romans 13:4 in their church’s official statement supporting capital punishment.

Theological Implications of State Social Justice Programs

Christians who identify with a Left political ideology frequently appeal to state intervention in the market as a means of promoting the common good. This is especially true as it relates to many Christians who place an emphasis on promoting social justice. Having attended a Jesuit University where progressive politics were dominant and social justice was held in very high esteem, I can readily attest to this. For examples beyond my personal anecdotes, see the anti-libertarian conference Erroneous Autonomy at The Catholic University of America, and note some recent trends among protestant Christians.
