My interview with MotorHome Diaries
ByAbout a month ago I had the great pleasure of meeting Pete Eyre, Jason Talley, and Adam Mueller of the MotorHome Diaries at the South Austin Freehold with a few of my fellow Libertarian Longhorns. We had a great time hanging out with them, and we did a few interviews with them as well.
My interview with them about Christianity and libertarianism was just posted today to YouTube, here it is!
We also had an interview for Libertarian Longhorns as well. We talk about what the point of the LL/YAL is, what we do on campus, and how college groups can develop successful programs. (Link to MHD blog post.)
For liberty!

Great stuff Norman! Very cool that you had a chance to connect with the MHD guys.
Looks like the first video was cut short in a few places – I thought you did a fine job explaining this site and what its all about. Kudos my friend!
I think that where you were going with the freeing of the slaves from Egypt as an example of God’s love for freedom was a great tack to take.
The most fascinating part of that story for me is how God gave them the 10 Commandments (a constitution, if you will) which for the first time in human history put all people, regardless of sex or class, on the same footing. But… once they got into the promised land, they looked at other nations and started clamoring for a king to lead them. God warned them of the folly of wanting a King who would oppress, tax and enslave them. And most interestingly, their demand for a king was actually an act of disobedience to God – and led to all sorts of problems that violated their liberty. Tax, theft, conscription, corruption.(1 Samuel 8).
That was the first time in human history that people briefly existed without a king ruling over them, and it wasn’t until the American Revolution that we see the second time. Both periods led to unparalleled prosperity and freedom for a brief time.
Anyway, I love this topic (can ya tell?) and I’m thrilled you got a chance to do this interview and posted it here.
Rod, thanks! It WAS a ton of fun to be with the MHD guys, I really hope to spend some more time with them in the future.
Regarding the “liberty texts” in the Bible, I realized exactly what I should have said immediately following the interview. I explained it in a comment on the MHD blog post of this vid:
“One thing I realized immediately after we did the interview was that I missed saying a critical point about “proof texts” in the Bible – or rather why there aren’t any. It is that there is no *need* for a proof text because freedom is supposed to be *assumed*. That is the natural law, the way things are at ground level. It is the STATE that must justify itself from the Scripture, not liberty!
That is why Romans 13 and Matthew 21 are so important to statists as THEIR proof-texts, and that is why we must consistently show why that assertion is wrong.
I’ll know what to say next time I’m in an interview, eh?”
I hear ya… don’t you always get your best thoughs and responses coming to mind a few hours AFTER you really needed them? I sure do
And that’s a really good point about the ‘assumed’ nature of freedom from God’s perspective. I’ve been having a debate with my Dad lately (who is a staunch conservative) and all he keeps throwing back at me is the ‘render unto Caesar’ line. You’ve got me thinking… keep it up!
Norman, I really enjoyed your interview, and it’s nice to connect the video of a living being with the words on your blog. We get a glimpse at the man behind it all haha. I thought you did a fair job of defending your views – especially considering that you probably have not done many interviews. The pressure of an interview sometimes causes us to forget some point, and I appreciate your additional support of the thematic freedom throughout the Good Book.
Thanks! I felt like I could have done a slightly better job, this is why I like to prepare people I interview with the questions beforehand. It’s hard to explain to one who does not believe in the Gospel why we do what we do sometimes. I’ll know how to talk about it more concretely next time!
