Hi Norman:

Thanks for a thought provoking response to this incident.

There are so many levels on which this action by Joe Stack can be seen, that is why I think so many different responses are given.

I take it you are a young man, not yet seen your best working years behind you. As such, it's probably hard to relate to the angst & frustration that a man of twice your years (Joe S. was 53) would feel at having his world turned upside down, by a rogue taxing agency out of control, and a controlled & largely indifferent society.

I don't say this justifies his actions - but that it explains how your argument, while quite theoretically correct according to a general Scriptural context, comes across as somehow selling his position short.

Do you consider yourself a pacifist ? Just curious.

I don't find it either Scriptural or faithful to Just War Principles to initiate violence, but I don't think it's Scriptural, wise or historically supportable to assert that violence is never a proper reponse to evil - sometimes it is the only action that is proper & will bring aggression to a halt.

One of my assumptions is that the sovereign citizens are in a 'quiet war' - have been for some time -- a war of attrition, from the "Plunder State", but due to postmodern tribalism & psycological conditioning, we only tend to perceive it if OUR ox is gored, if our particular interests are under attack.

If Rothbard is right (He is most certainly....) and a band of robbers is coming down your street, what is the proper response ?

Not that you initiate violence, but admit that such has already been initiated, and a Right & Righteous response MAY LIKELY be defensive violence, in order to preserve the Life, Liberty & property of you, your family & your neighbors.

Now, I don't think we're there yet, society wide. [I pray we don't need to go there.] I know there are measures not yet tried, that must be given their chance in turn, before 'war is the only option'...I'm sure as devoted Christians & Ron Paul / Lew Rockwell guys we both are, you could or already have written on these steps that are peaceful & the logical progression we MUST take.

But we all have a different context.

Did you read Joe Stack's letter ?; I did. He was your typical honest but frustrated American - he didn't appear to know Jesus as King & Savior, an anchor of sanity & peace in a sinful world, he didn't appear to understand how to peacefully restore his Sovereignty, as some of us have, [see www.SEDM.org ] and thus gained a measure of peace, despite the institutionalization of evil manifest in civil Government today.

If we are to love our neighbor, we MUST try to consider the pressures they face, and come along side them (Compassion being one of the chief christian virutes : to 'suffer along side with')as Christ did for us all.

So, I just wanted to try to provide some context, ask about if you affirm pacificm, and have considered the psychological nature of the war on our Liberty ?

In Christ & For Liberty,

Texas Minuteman - David

BTW, you have a great blog - I will visit often, far too few articulate Christian Libertarians around - your column on Josephus & the orgins of the State I will read soon.....

@Dagezhu: You are correct, I got my fact wrong on that one. I knew that one person had died and I thought I had confirmed that another passed away in intensive care. Thanks, it will be corrected right away.

He killed himself and one other person. While you may have intended to communicate that, the phrase, "ending his own life, killing two individuals..." makes it sound as though he killed himself plus two others.

Very nice response. I was very, very disturbed that some of my libertarian friends deemed Stack a hero. His actions were truly horrifying and despicable.
