The Olympics are currently used as, for the lack of a better term, propaganda for nationalism. Hence the American obsession with how many golds are received and what not. "We" have to be "better than everybody else" to keep up the veneer of American exceptionalism. Definitely not what was intended by the gentlemen who revived the tradition. I’ve always viewed them more as a tool for bolstering already dangerous levels of nationalism. In fact, remember writing a paper for my undergrad about the ludicracy of nationalism and used sport team support as a prime example. Drawing lines of support based solely on a person’s geographical location is such a dangerous thing.
