		<description>Holly: I think you are correct overall. The Olympics are currently used as, for the lack of a better term, propaganda for nationalism. Hence the American obsession with how many golds are received and what not. &quot;We&quot; have to be &quot;better than everybody else&quot; to keep up the veneer of American exceptionalism. Definitely not what was intended by the gentlemen who revived the tradition.</description>

		<description>You know, it&#039;s funny, despite all the kumbaya singing and world peace type chants incorporated in the ceremonies, I never thought of the Olympics as being a tool of peace. I’ve always viewed them more as a tool for bolstering already dangerous levels of nationalism. In fact, remember writing a paper for my undergrad about the ludicracy of nationalism and used sport team support as a prime example. Drawing lines of support based solely on a person’s geographical location is such a dangerous thing. Perhaps this is the reason the Olympics have always left me with a bit of a bad taste in my mouth…</description>
