My ASC 2009 talk is now available!

By

The presentation that I gave at the Austrian Scholars Conference 2009 became available on Mises.org today. The title, as you may recall, is “Science and the Free Market: How Government Distorts Scientific Research Through Public Funding.”

It’s exactly 15 minutes and 30 seconds long, so I hope you’ll take a few minutes to listen in. I noticed early on that I was not always clear in my pronoun references, oops! The majority of the time when I used the pronoun “they” I was referring to the government bureaucracy. Oh well, it’s still pretty good! :-D

Please feel free to offer comments. I definitely would appreciate it! Enjoy!

I thought that this was a pretty good talk, although I wished you had more time to speak about how the free market pursues basic research. I also remembered that you made a comment concerning the bubble in scientific research caused by public funding. Do you have an idea of what areas of research are in the bubble and when this bubble will burst?

When I click on it I get the last podcast, the response to comments on the Josephus article. Am I the only one getting this problem?

You’re right… I will fix that ASAP. Sorry!

Okay, I think I fixed it, try again and see what happens. If it doesn’t work for you, try downloading the file from the link. I *know* that works!

I recall a talk at the Oxford Libertarian Society in which the speaker claimed that (British) studies suggested every £1 the government spent on university/science funding decreased the amount of private funding by over £1.50.

I’ll try and look it up for you.

That result would not surprise me much, but it *would* call into question my bubble theory. I’m not sure I can have it both ways. For sure, though, what is going is that public funding misallocates resources. This much is certain.

Gabriel, my suspicion is that the biological sciences is the main bubble area. The funding data indicates that they are the recipients of the biggest *increases* in funding over the last 10 years. Funny how that also corresponds to the skyrocketing cost of medical care.
